
Official activities marking the 166th Independence Anniversary of the Republic of Liberia, held under the auspices of the Embassy of Liberia in Washington, D.C. highlighted Liberia’s cultural diversity, and the honoring of several distinguished personalities for their invaluable services to the community, country, and for the common good of mankind.
During the series of events that included an All-Day Cultural Extravaganza, an Intercessory Worship Service, and a Diplomatic Reception, Liberians of all walks of life in the United States, as well as friends and partners of Liberia, celebrated the country’s rich and diverse culture, peace and progress, and also gave thanks to the Almighty for preserving our country and its people.
The three-day series of events commemorating the 166th Independence Anniversary were held under the theme: “Partnership for Progress.” The events were as follows:
Saturday July 20, 2013: Programs marking the Independence celebration kicked off with the day-long Cultural Extravaganza, held on the grounds of the Embassy in Washington, D.C., with an estimated number of 6,000 Liberians, friends of Liberia and other residents in attendance.
The Cultural Extravaganza, which began with a parade of each flag of the 15 counties of Liberia, was divided into three categories involving an array of mask and cultural dancers, musicians, band and stage performers, Liberian fashion show, and Liberian food sales.
The parade of flags representing the various counties of Liberia was one of the thrilling aspects of the Cultural Extravaganza, as Liberians on the grounds who originated from each county marched behind the flag of their respective county.
Sunday, July 21, 2013: An Intercessory Worship Service was held at the Grace United Methodist Church in Takoma Park, Maryland, attended by Liberians and friends of Liberia. The service was hosted in collaboration with the Association of Liberian Christian Ministers in Metropolitan
Washington, D.C. Friday, July 26, 2013: An impressive and well-attended Diplomatic Reception was held at the Ambassador’s residence. Members of the African Diplomatic Corps and others from different countries, United States Government officials, including that of the State Department represented by Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Hon. Eunice Reddick, were among the hundreds of attendees. The diplomatic reception was highlighted by the honoring of 11 personalities who have sacrificially contributed to the welfare of their country.
