Chicago, Illinois - May 1, 2014: The Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, the Honorable Joseph N. Boakai, in collaboration with the Chicago, Illinois Chapter of the Future Farmers Association (FFA), have launched a campaign to collect more than one million textbooks for schools in Liberia.  The Book campaign will locate, collect, package, and ship educational books in the areas of reading, mathematics, science, agriculture, and world history to students in Liberia.
FFA is a US-based organization that is dedicated to enhancing the lives of students implementing agriculture education in an agriculture classroom setting, a personal application setting known as Supervised Agricultural Experience, and leadership growth setting through the FFA Organization.
The One Million Books Campaign will be coordinated by the Illinois/Liberia Partnership, a philanthropic group comprising Liberians and Illinois citizens, working to encourage and support agricultural education in Liberian public schools.
Speaking at the Launch of the campaign in Chicago recently, Vice President Boakai affirmed the support of Government to introduce agriculture in the curriculum of high schools in Liberia as a means of encouraging leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.  He said Liberia’s food security would be greatly enhanced if students and future leaders embrace agriculture as a career option.  Hon. Boakai, who is a former Minister of Agriculture, said the sector has one of the greatest potentials to create more jobs and spur the economic growth of Liberia.
Student Cody Carmen, Illinois Chapter President of the FFA, said his organization’s more than 17-thousand membership has pledged its commitment to collect and ship books to Liberia to enhance junior and senior high school education, by making textbooks available to their fellow students in Liberia.
