Liberian Embassy Hosts Students from Ohio State University

Washington, D.C. – February 23, 2018: In furtherance of its educational outreach program, the Embassy of Liberia in the United States held a special briefing for students of Ohio State University Thursday, February 22, 2018.Ohio State University is among several universities in the United States, Canada and Africa participating in the 16th annual International Model African Union Conference being held at Howard University in Washington D.C. from February 22-25, 2018.Ohio State University is representing Liberia at the Model AU Conference, which provides a unique opportunity for the students to study Africa and the African Union through simulation augment by briefings at African embassies in Washington.The briefing at the Liberian Embassy was intended to increase awareness of the functions and activities of the African Union relative to Liberia’s role as a founding member of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), forerunner of the AU. The briefing also focused on major economic, political and security issues related to Liberia and the African Continent in general.Welcoming the Ohio State University students and their faculty representative, H.E. Lois Lewis Brutus, Liberia’s Ambassador to the United States, underscored Liberia’s leadership role in the establishment of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), which was renamed the African Union.“You have chosen a great country to represent because of Liberia’s role in the liberation struggle to free the African Continent from colonial subjugation, and the promotion of peace and democracy around the world.”Ambassador Brutus highlighted Liberia’s role in promoting peace, security and economic progress in Africa through strong support of the AU, and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), among others.Speaking on behalf of the students, Ms. Laura M. Joseph, Assistant Director of the Office of International Affairs, Center for African Studies at Ohio State University, expressed gratitude to Ambassador Brutus and the Embassy for the warm reception accorded the student delegation and the very useful exchange of ideas that characterized the event.The Minister Counselor for Press and Public Affairs, Hon. Gabriel I H Williams, coordinated the briefing, which was also characterized by questions and answers, and comments from attendees. Below are photos from the event.
