Clarification on the Temporary Pause in Certain U.S. Immigrant Visa Processing

(Washington, D.C., January 15, 2026] — The Embassy of the Republic of Liberia in Washington, D.C., wishes to inform the general public, particularly Liberian nationals residing in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, as well as those who have contacted the Embassy seeking clarification, about recent reports concerning a temporary pause by the United States Government in the processing of certain immigrant visa categories for a group of countries, including Liberia.

This statement reiterates and supports the recent press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Liberia, and provides additional clarification to address questions and concerns raised by members of the Liberian community abroad.

What the U.S. Visa Pause Means

The U.S. Government has announced a temporary administrative pause affecting specific immigrant visa categories for nationals of 75 countries, including Liberia. This measure is linked to the application of U.S. immigration regulations, including public charge–related assessments and documentation requirements, and is not a country-specific sanction.

Importantly, the pause does NOT apply to non-immigrant visa categories, including but not limited to B-1 (Business Visitor) and B-2 (Tourist/Visitor) visas. It does not affect student visas (F-1), exchange visitor visas (J-1), diplomatic and official visas (A and G), or other eligible non-immigrant travel categories, subject to standard U.S. immigration requirements.

Liberia–United States Relations

Relations between the Republic of Liberia and the United States remain cordial, longstanding, and mutually respectful. Liberia and the United States continue to cooperate closely across economic and commercial diplomacy, trade and investment promotion, development cooperation, diaspora engagement, and multilateral affairs.

Guidance to Liberian Nationals
Liberian nationals are encouraged to rely on official information from the U.S. Department of State and the Government of Liberia, avoid misinformation, continue to apply for eligible visas including B-1 and B-2 visas, and seek clarification through official channels.

The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Washington DC Mission, remains actively engaged with the United States Government to ensure clarity and transparency.
