His Excellency Mr. Jeremiah C. Sulunteh, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Liberia to the United States of America, presented his Letters of Credence to President Barack Obama. The elaborate and impressive ceremony, which befits the strong historical ties and cooperation subsisting between the two countries and peoples, took place at the Oval Office of the White House. President Obama expressed his delight to welcome the Ambassador and family to the white House, and lauded President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s excellent stewardship of Liberia. He assured the Ambassador of his Government’s continued support of Liberia’s development objectives.
In response, Ambassador Sulunteh conveyed sincere greetings from President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Government and People of Liberia, as well as their gratitude for United States’ continued commitment and support of Liberia’s post conflict reconstruction and development
The ceremony at the White House was followed by a reception at the Ambassador’s Fulton Street’s residence, which brought together an array of Ambassadors accredited near Washington, DC, prominent Liberians as well as Community leaders and friends of Liberia. The Ambassador thanked and informed the distinguished gathering of the Government’s continued efforts to build a strong and united Country, and his desire to further strengthen the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between the United States and Liberia. He promised to foster increased collaboration with the Liberian Diaspora, as a valuable partner in the reconstruction and development at home. He thanked His Excellency Mr. William Bull, Sr., the outgoing Liberian Ambassador for his long and dedicated service to the Government and people of Liberia, and wished his family well after a very successful tour of duty.
In response to the Ambassador’s remarks, the Ambassador of Benin, His Excellency Cyrille Oguin, who is also the Dean of the ECOWAS Ambassadors Group, welcomed and assured his colleague of an excellent working relationship with members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited near Washington, DC.
In his capacity as President of the Diaspora Advisory Board, Counselor Mohamedu F. Jones, congratulated the Ambassador for his preferment and expressed, on behalf of the Diaspora community, closer collaboration with the Embassy for the development of Liberia. He reiterated the Community’s desire for the relevant constitutional reform in
Liberia that will provide “Dual Citizenship” for Liberians. He underscored that this is a modification in the Constitution that is long overdue, and if implemented, will greatly enhance the Diaspora community’s involvement in the developmental affairs of the Country. The Counselor cited countries in the region and elsewhere that are experiencing tremendous economic growth and development due to dual citizenship. Ms. Florence Harris, President of Liberian Community of the Metropolitan Area of Maryland and Washington, DC expressed similar sentiments, assured future and fruitful collaboration with the Embassy. Ambassador Charles Hansford, Sr., a luminary Liberian diplomat, also spoke on behalf of former Liberian Government officials and wished the Ambassador a successful tour of duty.
For his part, Ambassador William V. S. Bull, Sr., lauded President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s sagacious leadership and noted that as Ambassador Sulunteh had performed well in his previous Cabinet portfolios during the first term, he had no doubt that his tour of duty in Washington, DC will be marked by great success.
Ambassador Sulunteh Served in President Sirleaf’s first term as Minister of Labour, Transport and Post and Telecommunication. He was also an Economics Professor at two of Liberia’s highest institutions of learning, University of Liberia and Cuttington University College .
