Ambassador and Mrs. Sulunteh Host Meeting to Promote Education in Liberia

Washington, D.C. – May 28, 2014: At a well-attended meeting held recently at the Ambassador’s residence in Washington, D.C., Mrs. Kabeh Sulunteh, wife of Liberia’s Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Jeremiah Sulunteh, was introduced to leaders and members of the Liberian community for her work with the American Institutes for Research (AIR).The American Institutes for Research is an independent, non-partisan, not-for-profit organization that conducts behavioral and social science research on important social issues and delivers technical assistance, both domestically and internationally, in the areas of education, health, and workforce productivity.AIR is involved with educational programs in Liberia with a focus on girls’ education. In 2010, AIR began implementation of a three-year project called Girls’ Opportunity to Access Learning (GOAL). The GOAL project in Liberia was designed to increase girls’ primary school enrollment, attendance, and completion by providing scholarships to individuals and small grants to schools.The three-year project was funded by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).During the event at the Ambassador’s residence, the President and CEO of AIR, Mr. David Myers underscored the importance of developing Liberia’s educational system, and the role his organization is playing specifically in the area of girls’ education.Mr. Myers lauded Mrs. Sulunteh for her effort in promoting education, especially girls’ education in Liberia, as exemplified by her work with AIR.Welcoming the guests, Ambassador and Mrs. Sulunteh respectively emphasized that Liberia’s educational system is in urgent need of improvement so as to provide quality and affordable education to children in the country.Ambassador and Mrs. Sulunteh also noted that the education of girls is critical to the overall educational progress of the country, and lauded AIR and other international partners involved with the development of Liberia’s educational system.
