
Washington, D.C. – April 15, 2014: On the cool and beautiful evening of Thursday, April 10, 2014, the Chief Justice of the Republic of Liberia, His Honor Francis S. Korkpor, was the special guest at a dinner hosted by Ambassador and Mrs. Jeremiah and Kabeh Sulunteh, at the Ambassador’s residence.
During the dinner, which was also attended by senior staff of the Embassy of Liberia, Ambassador Sulunteh briefed the Chief Justice on the efforts of the Embassy in representing the Government and people of Liberia in the United States, while the Chief Justice also provided brief updates on the state of the Judiciary in Liberia.
Chief Justice Korkpor is in the United States to attend an International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) sponsored by the U.S. State Department, entitled: “United States Justice System” for Africa. The program, scheduled April 6-16, 2014, is being administered by Meridian International Center, a non-profit organization that promotes international understanding through professional exchange, educational and arts programs.
Accompanied by the Court Administrator at the Temple of Justice in Monrovia, Cllr. Elizabeth Boyenneh Nelson, and the Special Assistant to the Chief Justice, Mr. Francis Koko Gray, Chief Justice Korkpor is among three Chief Justices from Nigeria and Botswana attending the IVLP.
The objective of the IVLP is to understand the U.S. justice process, court administration and management systems, court technology, alternate dispute resolution and mediation, the role of law clerks, judicial ethics, and judicial training opportunities, among others.
From Washington, D.C., the Chief Justice and delegation also travelled to Chicago, IL, where he has been exploring a number of themes such as federal appellate and district court administration and operations, engaging the public – access and transparency, mediation and settlement, role and administration of specialty courts – domestic violence,” among others
